Using the Data Information Knowledge Wisdom Continuum
Have you ever searched for a journal paper online? The quantity of journals available in the health care industry is astounding. When you look at the library as a whole, you see untapped data. There is little organization until you start researching. Once narrowed down, you have information, and once applied, you have knowledge. After careful study and practice, you gain wisdom—knowledge applied in meaningful ways.

Do you think some aspects of your practice need more attention? Nursing informatics’ main goals are to manage and share data, information, knowledge, and wisdom. This continuum depicts nursing informatics as a whole. Develop a research question related to your practice area and explain how you would move from data to information, knowledge, and wisdom.

Prep:

In Nursing Informatics and the Foundation of Knowledge, look at Figure 6–2.

Develop a clinical question linked to your practice area.

Consider what you already know. What else do you need to know to answer the question?

Determine your study strategy using the continuum of facts, information, knowledge, and wisdom.

Explore the Walden Library’s databases. Identify which of these databases you would utilize to find data.

How would you find the most relevant articles and information once you’ve identified useful databases?

Prepare to extract relevant information from articles.

How would you structure the data to be useful? How could you go from useful knowledge to wisdom?

Answers

3–4 page document addressing the following:

1. Assignment Help – Summarize your question and explain how you would approach it using the data, information, knowledge, and wisdom continuum. Specify.

2. Determine the databases and search terms.

3. Explain how you would use the gathered information.

4. Can informatics help us learn?

How would you go from having relevant knowledge to making judgments based on the information you obtained during your database search?

A title page, an introduction, a summary, and a reference page are required.
