Group Theory Application Assignment – Paper & Oral Presentation:
The purpose of this project is two-fold: (1) to apply theory to nursing care of patient populations experiencing selected phenomena seen in nursing practice, and (2) to demonstrate information literacy competencies.

Working in small groups, students will identify a common phenomenon experienced by a patient population. Examples might be grief, anxiety, pain, birth/delivery, divorce, aging, retirement, cancer, and death. This clinical situation will be the focus of the group theory application project.

Once the phenomenon is selected, the student group will:
• use information literacy skills to research the phenomenon by retrieving peer-reviewed articles using professional databases
o each student will retrieve a minimum of two (5) peer-reviewed recent (within the last 5 years) journal articles on the phenomenon; electronic copies of each retrieved article must be submitted to the assigned Dropbox. Look for articles that
 describe the nature of the phenomenon (e.g., definition, characteristics/signs and symptoms, what it’s like to experience the phenomenon)
 describe research that has been conducted on the phenomenon, including research on how the phenomenon is best treated/managed
o each student will summarize the main points of their retrieved articles and share the summary with the other group members; an electronic copy of each student’s summary must be submitted to the assigned Dropbox.
• select a theory that is applicable to the phenomenon; it may be a nursing or borrowed theory, and either grand or middle range theory or a conceptual model
o you may use your textbook or peer-reviewed journal articles as the source for information about the theory/conceptual model
• create a patient case scenario that is a good example of a person (member of the population) might experience the phenomenon
o Collaborate to create (imagine) a believable, true-to-life patient story
• describe how the group would apply the selected theory if you were the nurse taking care of the patient in the case scenario
o Describe how the selected theory would influence the care you would give, including the assessment you would conduct, the interventions you would carry out, the referrals you would make, the way you would communicate with the patient and family, etc.?
Time will be given in class during weeks 9 through 15 for group work, with real-time in-class faculty support.

The student group will collaborate (using a Google Docs document would be one way to collaborate) on writing a description of the theory application assignment that includes the following components:
1. Introduction to the purpose and main components of the paper
2. Description of the phenomenon
3. Description of the selected theory
4. Description of the created case scenario
5. Summarization of the peer-reviewed articles retrieved by group members
6. Description of how the group members would apply the selected theory to the nursing care of the patient in the created case scenario

Suggested length of the paper is 5 to 7 pages. Ace homework tutors – APA format is required. An abstract is required.

The written description of the assignment will be uploaded in the assigned Dropbox; the due date is in the course calendar.

During week 16 (Final exam week) each group will formally present its theory application assignment during class. Each group will have a limited amount of time for its presentation. Each member of every group must participate in the formal presentation. Use of the presentation software of the group’s choice (e.g., MS PowerPoint, Prezi) is required for the formal presentation.
