RESEARCH PAPER TOPICS
For the research paper in Unit 7, you must choose one of the following topics to write about:
* There has been a great deal of discussion and debate in the past several years over the idea of free college education in the United States. While several other countries around the world already offer free college, the United States has yet to follow suit. Explore the idea of free college and write a paper either in support of or in opposition to this idea.
* There is much about our world that we don’t know, that seems mysterious and perhaps doesn’t even exist at all. Two such topics are the possible existence of UFOs and the possible existence of Bigfoot. While considered by some to be simply myths, both are widely researched, including by our own government (and military in the case of UFOs). Research either UFOs or Bigfoot (do NOT write about both; your paper must focus on one or the other) and determine whether you believe they exist. * Every year, the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom comes out with their Banned Books List. The list consists of books that have been challenged by both individuals and groups in attempts to remove the books from schools and libraries. Some books that show up on this list fairly consistently are the Harry Potter series and The Handmaid’s Tale. Should people be able to have books banned from libraries? Research the issues and write about your position.
* Should student athletes be paid? Some argue that college students are students first and athletes second and that receiving an education (which is often paid for via scholarships) is their payment. They argue that paying the students would detract from their primary educational goals. Others argue that student athletes make a lot of money for their schools and should be compensated accordingly. What is your position on the issue? Research the topic and support your position in your research paper.
* Zoos and aquariums serve an important role in caring for animals, educating the public, and promoting conservation efforts. There are those, however, who say that they cause more harm to the animals than good and should be closed. Research the issue of zoos/aquariums, the purpose they serve, and their negative aspects and decide where you stand on the issue. Ace my homework – Write your paper in support of that position.
* There are pros and cons to teens’ use of social media, from staying connected with friends and getting to know people from many different cultures and backgrounds online to experiencing increased instances of cyber bullying, depression, and anxiety. * Due to budget constraints, many school districts are beginning to eliminate art and music programs from the school curriculum. There are those who argue that these subjects are not required from an educational perspective and should be removed if the budget does not allow for them. Others argue that art and music contribute a great deal both to students’ educations as well as to their overall wellbeing and that these programs should be kept in schools no matter the cost. Research school budgeting and the importance (or lack thereof) of music and art education and write your paper in support of one of these positions.
