The Roaring Twenties (seen above in the Great Gatsby) was the decade when the United States went from a nation of small towns and farms to one where the majority of the people lived in cities. Industialization created a consumer society based on buying goods on credit. How did society react to this “modern age”? Who benefited the most from the 1920s? Who didn’t? How did these people fight a cultural war?
By the 1930s, the United States began to experience the Great Depression. One out of four Americans lost their job by 1932. People were out of work and moving to find jobs, smilar to the Joad family from the novel, Grapes of Wrath (the famous Tom Joad clip from the 1940 movie is above). How did society change during the Great Depression? What role did the federal government play? Was the New Deal a success or failure? Explain why.
