The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) has determined core competencies that apply to all nurse practitioners, regardless of specialty or patient population focus. NONPF has represented them within nine broad areas of core competence. NONPF created the first set of Nurse Practitioner Competencies in 1990; the most recent updates were incorporated in 2017. This synthesis course has had the overarching objective of preparing you to be able to synthesize knowledge gained throughout the program and be prepared to apply each of the nine core competencies within your selected areas of practice and your representative communities.

Scientific Foundations: Throughout the program, I have acquired a comprehensive understanding of scientific foundations that are critical for providing safe and effective patient care. These competencies include anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and microbiology, among others. The program provided me with an opportunity to learn about various scientific foundations by attending lectures, participating in lab sessions, and clinical rotations. The program provided me with the opportunity to learn how to evaluate care outcomes and implement effective interventions to improve quality. These competencies will allow me to develop and implement quality improvement initiatives that improve health outcomes in my community.
Practice Inquiry: Practice inquiry is a crucial competency that allows nurse practitioners to identify gaps in practice and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions. Through the program, I learned how to use a variety of research methods, including quantitative and qualitative research, to answer clinical questions. I also learned how to critically appraise evidence to determine its validity and applicability to clinical practice. These skills will enable me to engage in practice inquiry to identify gaps in care and develop evidence-based interventions to improve outcomes.
Technology and Information Literacy: Technology and information literacy are essential for providing safe and effective patient care. The program provided me with a comprehensive understanding of how to use technology to support clinical decision-making and engage patients in their care. Additionally, I gained an understanding of how to navigate electronic health records and use technology to communicate with other healthcare professionals. These competencies will allow me to use technology to improve patient outcomes and facilitate communication among healthcare professionals.
Policy: The program provided me with an understanding of healthcare policies and their impact on patient care. I learned how to navigate healthcare policies and advocate for patients’ needs while adhering to regulations. Additionally, I gained an understanding of healthcare policies and their impact on vulnerable populations. These competencies will allow me to navigate healthcare policies and advocate for policies that improve patient outcomes in my community.
Health Delivery System: The program provided me with an understanding of healthcare delivery systems and how they impact patient care. I learned how to navigate healthcare systems to improve access to care and address disparities. Additionally, I gained an understanding of healthcare delivery systems’ impact on patient outcomes and the importance of collaboration among healthcare professionals. These competencies will allow me to navigate healthcare delivery systems and improve access to care for vulnerable populations.
Ethics: The program provided me with an understanding of ethical principles and how to apply them in clinical practice. I learned how to identify ethical dilemmas and apply ethical decision-making models to address them. Additionally, I gained an understanding of how cultural and personal beliefs impact ethical decision-making. These competencies will allow me to provide patient-centered care that is based on ethical principles and respects the cultural and personal beliefs of patients.
Independent Practice: The program provided me with an understanding of how to establish and manage an independent practice. I learned how to develop a business plan, manage finances, and adhere to regulations. Additionally, I gained an understanding
