A sense of self is developed through roles and statuses that are reinforced through social structures and that shape our personal experiences. Roles are patterns of behavior that we use every day to reflect our social status, such as the role of parent, worker, daughter/son, student, neighbor, etc. Each of these roles is associated with a different status.
Social institutions are systems and structures that shape the activities of groups and individuals in society. Family, education, and religion are examples of social institutions that affect the everyday lives of people at a micro-level.

Nature and Nurture in Socialization: Unraveling the Dichotomy
Socialization, as a foundational process in human development, is shaped by the interplay of nature and nurture. Nature refers to the inherent biological and genetic factors that influence an individual’s characteristics and behavior, while nurture encompasses the external influences of the environment, culture, and social interactions that mold an individual’s personality and beliefs.
The Nature Factor:
In the context of socialization, the nature aspect focuses on the genetic predispositions and inherited traits of an individual. These inherent characteristics can manifest in certain behavioral tendencies, cognitive abilities, and emotional responses. For example, some studies suggest that introverted tendencies may have a genetic basis, leading individuals with these traits to gravitate towards solitary activities and introspective behaviors.
The Nurture Factor:
On the other hand, the nurture aspect emphasizes the impact of the social environment and experiences on shaping an individual’s development. External influences, such as family, peers, education, and culture, play pivotal roles in molding beliefs, values, and social skills. For instance, a child raised in a supportive and nurturing family is more likely to exhibit empathy and prosocial behavior, nurtured by their social interactions.
Nature vs. Nurture in Socialization:
To illustrate the nature versus nurture debate, let’s consider the example of twins separated at birth and later reunited. Despite sharing identical genetic makeup (nature), their individual socialization experiences (nurture) may significantly differ due to their distinct environments and upbringing. One twin raised in a strict and disciplined household may develop a reserved and disciplined personality, while the other twin raised in a more liberal environment may exhibit a more outgoing and carefree demeanor.
Development of Self:
The development of self is a complex interplay of nature and nurture. While nature contributes to the foundation of an individual’s temperament and personality, nurture molds and refines these traits through social interactions and experiences. For instance, a person with a naturally assertive disposition may further develop their leadership skills through experiences in team-based activities, such as sports or group projects.
In conclusion, socialization is a multifaceted process influenced by both nature and nurture. While nature provides the groundwork, nurture refines and shapes an individual’s social behaviors, beliefs, and sense of self through interactions with the environment and society.
