Introduction
The efforts of process improvement ought to involve an organized approach that complies with a particular method, where the specific strategies to achieve this undertaking might vary. Process improvement could also entail a series of actions to achieve new goals and objectives such as enhancing performance and decreasing costs. In this regard, the paper focuses on 3 process improvement tools.
Process improvement tools and techniques
One of the tools is value-stream mapping (VSM). This technique offers a picture of information flow and work flow in an uninterrupted process. Therefore, one is able to assess a present state and recommend a future state that decreases waste; that is, inventory, over production, transport, defects and over processing. The other tool is the Five S’s. It provides a methodology for arranging, cleaning, formulating, and sustaining a work environment that is productive (Summers, 2011). This tool is similar to VSM in that both lead to a reduction of waste. By ensuring that the working area is clean and well organized, Five S’s helps to decrease waste and maximize productivity. Kanban is the other technique. This one assists in harnessing the visual information power by utilizing sticky notes on a whiteboard to build an “image” of one’s work (Summers, 2011). In this regard, Kanban is similar to VSM in that it makes it possible for one to see their workflows so as to give and receive context for the work. Kanban is different from VSM and Five S’s because unlike these 2 tools, it does not focus on waste reduction.
In my opinion, the Kanban is the best technique to apply in my project. This is because contrary to other tools and techniques that force fit change from the start, Kanban focuses on evolution rather than revolution. This technique centers on the basic truth that one cannot get where they want to go without first knowing where they are. As such, it makes it possible to visualize the process, restrict work in process, and constantly improve.
Conclusion
Obviously, the VSM, Five S’s and Kanban are essential process improvement tools and techniques. They help to improve workflow, decrease wastage and maximize productivity. All these serve to make the project work easier and more efficient.
