Ethical dilemmas are quite common and nurses encounter them regularly. In the past, parents or guardians were permitted to have access to the medical records of their underage patients. However recent changes in the HIPAA Privacy Rule have enforced some restrictions which deny parents and guardians access to their minor patients’ information under certain situations (Dagher, et al 2018: 2024 – Write My Essay For Me | Essay Writing Service For Your Papers Online) One of the hardest situations which tested my ethical quotient occurred last year when I was approached by Daisy, a teenage girl, who wanted to acquire a birth control pill. The girl was the daughter of a close family friend who was also a regular patient in our clinic.
At first, I was baffled by the situation as my parental instincts kicked in because I almost saw Daisy as my daughter. However, as a trained professional I knew it was time for me to sideline the parenting bit for a while and assess the situation as a practitioner. In Daisy’s case, I chose to prescribe the pill. As per the medical requirement, I did the preliminary diagnosis of Daisy’s health in comparison with her family medical history. However, the hardest part was yet to come.
Before handing the note to Daisy, I had to take Daisy through the dosage as her practitioner. I had to explain to her when to begin taking the Pill. We also had an awkward but constructive discussion about how to use it, the expected side effects, and precautionary measures to take if the pills are missed. After the process was over, the hardest part now was tied to the first that Daisy’s mother was my good friend and I felt obligated to tell her about the situation. As a parent, I felt it was necessary because it would help her mother look out for Daisy and guide her through the stage. At the same time I am a professional tied by ethical principles and besides if I told her mother about the situation she probably would not trust me again. Therefore, I decided to sit her down and told her that she had to break the news to her mother. I also tried to convince her of the importance of involving her mother in the situation which she agreed to.
