As a nurse leader and manager, I will be involved in the decision-making process using the DECIDE model by following these steps:

Define the problem or decision to be made – Identify the problem or decision that needs to be made, and gather relevant data to understand the issue.

Establish the criteria for the decision – Establish the criteria or standards that will be used to evaluate the options and make the decision.

Consider alternatives – Generate a list of possible options or alternatives that could solve the problem or achieve the desired outcome.

Identify the pros and cons of each alternative – Evaluate each alternative against the established criteria and identify the advantages and disadvantages of each option.

Decide on the best alternative – Use the information gathered to make a decision on the best alternative.

Evaluate the decision – Evaluate the decision after it has been made to determine its effectiveness and whether any changes need to be made.

An example of a clinical situation where the DECIDE model could be applied is in the management of a patient with sepsis. The nurse leader or manager would need to define the problem, which is the patient’s sepsis, and gather relevant data such as vital signs, laboratory results, and medical history. The criteria for the decision would be established, such as the patient’s level of consciousness, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation. The alternatives could include administering antibiotics, fluid resuscitation, and monitoring the patient’s response to treatment. The pros and cons of each alternative would be considered based on the established criteria, and the best alternative would be chosen. Finally, the decision would be evaluated based on the patient’s response to treatment and any necessary changes would be made.

In response to my peer’s example, I agree that the DECIDE model is an effective framework for making decisions in healthcare settings. I think it is important to gather all relevant data and establish clear criteria for decision-making. Additionally, considering all available alternatives and weighing the pros and cons of each option is crucial to making an informed decision. Finally, evaluating the decision and making any necessary adjustments based on the patient’s response is essential for ensuring optimal outcomes. Overall, the DECIDE model can help nurse leaders and managers make effective decisions that positively impact patient care.
