One mechanism of beginning to gain familiarity with determinants of health within a community is to perform a windshield survey. This can be accomplished by either driving or walking through your community of interest (My community of interest for practicum setting is People with developmental disability that lives in a group home. They also attend day program), optionally spending some time in public spaces in observation, and assessing services related to health, economics, and social structure of the environment.
Rector and Stanley (2022) provide guidelines for a Community Familiarization (Windshield) Survey (Figure 15-3, p. 433) that should be used as the outline for your assessment. Introduction
This paper presents the findings of a windshield survey conducted of the community for people with developmental disabilities who live in a group home and attend a day program in [location]. The purpose of the survey was to become familiar with the determinants of health within this community as outlined by Rector and Stanley (2022).
Physical Environment

Limited income could impact access to healthcare and healthy foods. However, funding for the group home and day program help address economic barriers. The nearby services also support health needs being met. The social structure promotes inclusion of people with disabilities. In the event of an emergency, the availability of services and social support network could aid preparation and response efforts. Overall, this community appears to have strengths that support population health for people with developmental disabilities.
