Korea as a Nation l think it makes sense to speak of Korea as a nation rather than an ldentity. There are different criteria to consider while referring to Korea as a nation rather the Korean identity based on criteria explained by John Duncan in Proto-nationalism in Premodern Korea. Duncan highlights that Korea is part of the rise of modern nation-states that are based on strong social and cultural foundations. The history of Korean nation started with common race and historical life with different kingdoms. The kingdoms shared common culture and values and pushed the struggles of the nations into a common destiny. Despite having no mixed races in Korea, Korea is nation and the history of the country depicts the progression of a unified state.
Scholars in Korea argue that the struggle for the three kingdoms in the society to unify politically mirrors the push for nationalism in Europe, and Latin American regions. The forging of a common sense of ideology and identity is an important element of forming a strong nation. Korea has undergone this process and the shared values help to unite communities in a recognized nation.
Another aspect is the rise of capitalist industrialism system in the Korean society. The rise of capitalism helped to foster a sense of belonging to the communities and encouraging advancement of the educational systems. Duncan (1998) explains that the state of Korea was important in assisting to create a nation rather than a nation giving birth to state. Nations are also formed from the natural components of history and modernity. Korea has benefited from the modernization process that helped to promote technological advancement in the country. The people of Korea also appreciate being part of a long-term political entity that is an important criteria for a political nation. Therefore, the evidence from the readings supports statement than Korea is a nation rather than an identity. Reference Duncan, J. (1998). Proto-nationalism in premodern Korea.
