The reasons for human
trafficking range from sexual slavery to forced labor. Human traffickers use
force and other forms of coercion to exploit their victims. In most cases,
human traffickers are paid or are accorded with other benefits as a reward for
their illegal deeds. Human trafficking is illegal in most countries as it
blatantly violates the victims’ rights to freedom of movement besides
exploiting them. This paper discusses the reasons and consequences of human
trafficking.
Traffickers
A trafficker is an
individual, family, or an organized group of people who participate in human
trafficking. Organized human traffickers have external facilitators. These
parties are responsible for activities such as advertising and distributing
people to the market where they are needed. However, it is not uncommon to find
traffickers who are unprofessional. All in all, these individuals are
criminals.
Victims
Human traffickers are not
respecters of persons. Adult men, women, and children can fall victim to this
crime. Statistics indicate that over seventeen thousand people are trafficked
into the United States every year. The reasons for trafficking dictate the
nature of the victims. For instance, women and children are more likely work as
sex slaves while men may become as laborers.

Sexual
Exploitation. Women and children are the principal
victims of sexual exploitation. Children may be
forced into child prostitution at that tender age. Women, on the other
hand, may be taken to brothels where they
work as prostitutes against their will. Additionally, these parties may be
forced to shoot pornographic videos.
Labor
Trafficking. The principal victims of labor
trafficking are men. In some instances, women and children are victims of labor
trafficking. Adult men are forcefully shipped to various countries to work at
construction sites since they are a source of cheap labor. Women and children
may be employed to work as domestic laborers. Other examples of labor
trafficking are involuntary servitude and
bonded labor. The laborers’ deserved pay goes to the human traffickers.
Organ
Trafficking. Human beings may be forcefully taken to
foreign places to give up their organs. With the increasing need for organ
transplants, organ trafficking has been on the rise. Here, women, children, and
men are potential victims of organ trafficking. They are coerced into give up
their bodies with the promise of a refund. These promises are later broken as they can either gain
nothing or may be paid less than they
expected. Additionally, victims may have their organs removed without their
knowledge. They may be duped into taking
medical examinations, and while they are at it, the needed organs are
harvested.
Consequences
of Human Trafficking
Psychological
Stress. Traffickers may exercise extreme levels of violence
on their subjects during the recruitment, initiation, and indoctrination processes. This force causes
mental stress to the victims as they replay these episodes. Additionally,
traffickers capitalize on the weaknesses of victims. They may manipulate an
orphaned child or a woman in an abusive relationship with the promise of
greener pastures. This manipulation leads to emotional and psychological
stress. Sexual abuse, forced prostitution, and gang rape are recipes for
complex trauma. Children are especially easy
to manipulate, and traffickers destroy their mental and physical health by
emotionally abusing them. The eventuality of this ill treatment is
psychological stress.
Health
Concerns. Sexual exploitation is a major contributor to the
spread of sexually transmitted diseases. HIV/AIDS is the most common pandemic
that affects sex workers. It is heart wrenching to realize that children are infected at a tender age, and this occurs
without their knowledge. Since most sex workers forcefully engage in sexual
relations with their ‘customers’, they may not be in a position to protect
themselves from infections.

Conclusively, human
trafficking is an illegal activity. It is a violation of human rights.
Traffickers belong to organized gangs that can be
combated with adequate police intervention. Women, men, and children are
victims of trafficking for labor and sexual exploitation among others. Human
trafficking contributes to psychological stress and spread of diseases such as
HIV/AIDS. It should be on every nation’s agenda to do away with human
trafficking.
