In contemporary society, discrimination against people based on their sexual orientation is forbidden by law in the United States. In the article,” US Supreme Court ruling ‘extremely positive’ for LGBT community,” application of equality in human rights is highly advocated for, especially for lesbians, gay men, and bisexuals (United Nations, (2020). The article acknowledges that even after legalizing homosexuality, the American Culture still does not fully incorporate same-sex relationships, with the major contributing factor being religious perspectives.
Gays and lesbians are still discriminated against, just like in the 20th century, where they were brutally harassed by the police (Truscott, 1969). Police raided a Stonewall Inn bar arrested many people leading to riots that saw the first group of people fighting for gay rights. Today, such brutality has been eliminated by the legalization of gay rights, which accord them the freedom of socialization and movement.
The article corresponds with primary sources on the controversial nature of homosexuality witnessed in the gay liberation movements in the 1970s (Morris, 2016: 2024 – Do my homework – Help write my assignment online). However, despite the local regulations, lesbians and gay men still existed in the communities operating in secrecy. As a result of social movements’ diligence and advocacy over the years, gay rights are recognized today. They have also been accepted in a religious setting where lesbian and gay couple marriages are conducted.
The American culture has been significantly influenced by civil rights movements such as feminists and gay activists, which have changed the problems associated with each century (From the American Yawp). These movements are still in motion today, advocating for equal treatment of marginalized groups of people. Today, American same-sex marriages have been adopted and recognized widely in all states leading to gays and lesbians’ freedom of expression.
