Look at your feature theories as explanatory frameworks for understanding what it is you’re interested in studying relative to communication behavior in your area of focus–i.e. whatever area of communication you are particularly interested in exploring with your advanced degree.
There will be three major objectives (and one minor):
1. Describe the unique nature of the context within which the theories apply (this might include a description of the attributes of the unique population).
2. Explicate the theories (I recommend you focus on several theories by comparing and contrasting them with each other, you do not need to go into great detail, but rather sketch out the essential points) and expand on how they’ve been applied within different contexts.
3. Speculate how one could productively apply these theories to your specific context (you might mention their weaknesses and strengths in this regard, and again contrast them with the weaknesses and strengths of other theories that might be or have been applied).
4. Form a conclusion.

Think of your chosen theories as spotlights (or floodlights, depending on the nature of the theories) that you can focus on your area of interest.
