Week 2 Discussion Questions

1. Discuss the article by DePergola (2020). You can focus your discussion on questions such as: How do the ethical principles apply to the current COVID-19 pandemic? Are there any ethical dilemmas associated with the outbreak? How can you use ethical decision-making processes to approach the dilemma?
2. In chapter 4 we learn about the ethical principles nonmaleficence, beneficence, autonomy and justice. These 4 principles are considered the pillars of medical ethics. We also learn about other important ethical principles, veracity, and paternalism. Explain one of these principles and how they apply to the clinical lab.
3. Imagine you work in blood bank. In respecting patient autonomy we need to respect the religious beliefs and practices of patients. How would you deal with patient autonomy in a situation where a patient’s religion states it is wrong to receive a blood transfusion, yet the patient needs the blood transfusion to survive?
4. This week we learn about ethical decision making. Imagine you are a clinical technologist and you just finished a run of HIV PCR testing for viral loads for a clinical trial. You run a negative control, low positive control and high positive control. You also include an external control on your run. You get the results of your assay and your negative control was invalid. All the other controls worked. What do you do?
