Paper 2
You will write a 1250-1500 word paper on how aspects of Greek or Roman culture responded to specific historical/cultural circumstances. The specific periods or movements you should write about are as follows: The Greek “Dark Ages” (also known as the “Heroic Age”) The Persian Wars and the Pre-eminence of Athens Constantine’s Adoption of Christianity in the later Roman Empire The Classical Period of ancient Greece The Age of Alexander and beyond (the Hellenistic Era) Rome’s transition from being a Republic to an Empire (in the time of Augustus and beyond) You should pick TWO genres/types of art or thought and show how works of art or thought responded to changing ideas in the period or movement you have chosen. Use between 2-3 specific examples to illustrate each genre. The genres include: Drama Religion Poetry Architecture Sculpture Philosophy Your task is to show how that specific work of art or thought was influenced by the historical and cultural changes that surrounded its production. You should have a general description of that historical and cultural context (for example, the Hellenistic Era). Go on to describe how the works you chose reflect these ideas. Staying with the Hellenistic period as our example, you could give a detailed description of several statues that reflect new themes of diversity, emotional expression, and technical virtuosity. You could also show how town planning and architecture changed with the creation of new, planned cities with buildings that were much bigger in scale and tended to glorify the ruler. Don’t forget to illustrate your discussion with examples of what came BEFORE the period in question so you can make it very clear as to what has changed. Your paper will not earn a passing grade unless it meets ALL of the criteria listed below. If you have any questions about what any of this means, you must ask well ahead of the submission date. A) You must provide adequate in-text citation (MLA or APA) and a works cited page. If you do not do so, you will receive a grade of “F” (0) for the assignment. Don’t forget that you need to cite an author’s information and ideas even when you have put that material into your own words. It is CRITICALLY important to use in-text citation. As you use an author’s ideas or information you must tell the reader where you got the information from. Every body paragraph should have a minimum of one citation. B) Papers must be at least 1250 words in length. You must include a word count somewhere on your paper. Do not count the works cited page in your word count C) You must work independently and submit work that is your own. Cheating or plagiarizing in any way can ultimately result in dismissal from the class and expulsion from the college. Any plagiarized assignments will receive a grade of zero with further action taken, based on the discretion of the instructor. That action could include giving an “F” for the course and/or referring the student to the Dean’s office for possible disciplinary action. Plagiarism is defined as the appropriation or imitation of the language, ideas, and thoughts of another author, and representation of them as one’s original work. In other words, do not copy information from textual sources (online or otherwise) without proper citation. It’s tempting to just ‘cut and paste’ but it will not lead to success. E) You must use a MINIMUM of 3 academically reputable sources (peer reviewed articles or books). These do NOT include web-sites, encyclopedias, your text book or ABC-CLIO. Use the Valencia database to access academic periodicals and/or books. It is possible to cite your text book (but it is a NOT strong source), articles that are not peer-reviewed and academic web sites, but these sources are to supplement, not replace, the required sources.
