ASSIGNED READING AND VIEWING FOR RESPONSE TWO: Dress Codes and “Modest” Dress: Texts to Read and View for Response 2

In the second module of the course, we will continue to look at the way in which the same issue can be addressed in radically different ways by different people, all of whom can make strong arguments in favor of their perspective. Your second speech asks you to consider your speech topic through the lens of a research question that invites multiple, equally plausible arguments. I have chosen to use the issue of dress codes and “modest” dress for this section of the course because there are so many different ways of looking at the topic, and it’s an issue that is very much in flux in contemporary American society.

Some argue that dress codes and dressing “modestly” are essential to mitigating apparent social class differences in schools. Others argue that they are oppressive and place blame for misconduct on the victim rather than the perpetrator. Still others argue that they for gender conformity and/or stifle creativity and individuality. And some argue that it is possible to have “sensible” dress codes and guidelines that take counterarguments into consideration.

The point of this section isn’t to ascertain what the right point of view is or to come to an agreement on what we should all believe. It is, rather, to serve as an example of how to consider multiple points of view and taking them into consideration before concluding what you personally think about the issue. In fact, the response asks you not to take a stand but to, instead, appreciate the strengths and note the weaknesses of the assigneed articles and videos for this section.
