Etiology
BPD is primarily caused by the use of mechanical ventilation and supplemental oxygen in premature infants.
Other risk factors include: low birth weight, infection, and inflammation in the lungs.
Signs and Symptoms
BPD can cause difficulty breathing, wheezing, rapid breathing, and fatigue.
The disease can also result in feeding difficulties, slow weight gain, and a decrease in the amount of oxygen in the blood.
Possible Complications
BPD can result in chronic lung problems such as asthma, bronchitis, and pneumonia.
The disease can also increase the risk of other health problems such as cardiovascular disease, neurodevelopmental problems, and growth issues.
Interventions
Medical Interventions: medications such as bronchodilators and corticosteroids may be used to treat BPD. Antibiotics may also be prescribed to prevent or treat infections.

Nursing Interventions: nursing interventions for BPD include providing adequate nutrition and hydration, monitoring vital signs, and providing respiratory therapy.
