RESPONSE 1:

This week we are looking at back up and restoration products. Given the fact that I know little about these products, although I have probably used them and just did not realizer it. I wanted to look at and compare the top three rated backup and restore products according to Techradar.pro. The list that the website gave is as follows:

Acronis True Image

EaseUS ToDo Backup

Paragon Backup and Recovery

On the website they outline basic good and bad of each product. Although these reviews are of course objective. Sticking to plain facts of these points may lead us to the best possible back up and restore product presented.

Acronis True Image offers local and cloud backup, drive cloning, features anti-ransomware, and is compatible with multiple media platforms. With these features comes system usage and that means slower boot time.

EaseUS Todo Backup has been around for a while and offers multiple packages. It works on Mac and Windows platforms, your choice of back up and even the ability to use cloud backup as well. The backup is limited to 16TB, and it does not include anti-malware solutions.

Paragon Backup and Recovery is simple and effective. It has a walk-through wizard that guides the user through the back up process. This includes adjusting the settings according to personal wishes, incremental or automatic backups are by the user’s choice. It uses WinPE recovery media that can even help when your computer wont start. It uses a bootable USB stick to help restoration and even help them boot. My favorite part however is its affordability.

After looking at each product, and like I said previously with minimal experience. I would go with option number three, Paragon Backup and Recovery. I appreciate the simplicity and the ability to use a USB to give a solid backup separate from the computer or device. The downfall in my mind and what I believe most people will not like is the lack of cloud back up and no advertised anti-malware.

What are your thoughts?

RESPONSE 2:

Back-up and restore products have come a long way in the last 10 to 12 years. I remember at my first assignment, we used a Dell solution that was located in a building separated from ours on the other side of the base. Back then, our back-ups we used tape drives for backing up data. We had to categorize and rotate the tapes on a routine basis, and once in a while, perform recoveries. The data recoveries took hours and sometimes required us to switch out multiple tapes. It was a long process, and what made it more fun was now, and then the arm that moved the tapes around would stop working. Fast forward, and now we have cloud solutions such as Microsoft’s Azure back-up utility. Azure has a built-in Recovery Services Vault, which is a management tool that stores recovery points and helps the user to perform back-up operations. Azure offers three different recovery options, and they include Original Location Recover (OLR), Alternate Location Recovery (ALR), and finally, Individual File Location Recovery (ILR). OLR allows data recovery to its original location, ALR allows recovery to an alternate location if the VM goes missing or you don’t want to write over another VM. Finally, ILR provides recovery of individual files or folders inside VM. Microsoft Azure Backup Server (MABS) is intergraded with other Microsoft products like Hyper-V VMs, Microsoft SQL Server, SharePoint Server, Microsoft Exchange, and Windows clients. I wish I could see this solution in action, just to see how far we have come from tape back-ups, maybe one day.
