Assignment: Critiquing Quantitative, Qualitative, or Mixed Methods Studies
Analyzing quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-methods research
Critiquing the validity and robustness of published research is essential for evidence-based practice. Weeks 5 and 6 focused on quantitative research. Week 7 will focus on qualitative and mixed techniques research. This Assignment requires you to analyze and contrast quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methodologies research studies.

Prep:

Choose a health topic that relates to your current practice. Your Course Portfolio Project or another topic of your choice.

Find two papers in scholarly publications about your portfolio topic in the Walden Library: 1) Pick one article with a quantitative design and 2) pick one with a qualitative OR mixed design. Not systematic or integrative reviews, just isolated studies (including meta-analysis and metasynthesis). Use articles from your reference list. Not finding these two sorts of research on your portfolio topic? Pick another.

Find the following documents in this week’s Learning Resources to obtain the templates for each article:

Critique a Qualitative Study

Critique a Quantitative Study

Consider the template fields as you read each article. Begin drafting a paper analyzing the two research methodologies listed below. Take stock of both quantitative and qualitative research. How would you reply if told “Qualitative research is not true science”?
