ARTICLE 1
Butterfly Article
A new article released recently explored flight in butterflies and how they are able to fly efficiently and how their unique take off can help them evade predators. Interestingly, the pattern of wing flapping was first described some 50 years ago, but this is the first study to actually simulate take off in a wind tunnel and determine how they are able to fly efficiently even though their wings are far larger than we would think they need to be to fly effectively. Ultimately this experiment was able to explore both how the shape and the flexibility of butterfly wings are used to be an efficient flier. The authors explain that when butterflies clap their wings up and together to take off, the wings are not brought in flat against one another as would likely be expected, but instead they cup their wings (flexibility) trapping air that the then use to force themselves forward by pushing the trapped air behind them. Think jet propulsion. This efficient clap of the wings allows them to quickly evade predators.
I thought this article was interesting because I like butterflies, but also because I think it is really cool to learn how organisms work. Studying organisms and how the efficiently do tasks often has implications for us and how we build or design machines. Think Velcro. Velcro was invented when a man noticed the burs from plants stuck to him, when he looked at them under a microscope, he realized the burs had a hook shape on them. The inventor designed a similar structure with fabrics and plastics and Velcro! There are thousands of these examples.
So, how might this discovery inform us? When people are wanting to design small flying objects, think drones, they need to make sure that they can take off efficiently or deal with changes in air speed/direction/turbulence. This discovery could have implications in newer or more efficient designs of drones or other objects people would like to see fly.
What are observations you have made in the natural world (other organisms/not humans) that have let you see something in your world differently?
What are some other inventions that you know about that have come about by people exploring how other organisms live/behave that are not necessarily medical related?
ARTICLE 2
The article I chose claims young adults that use social media more frequently than others tend to struggle with depression more than the ones that don’t. New studies actually proved that high initial social media use led to an increase in depression but there were no changes in social media use. Dr. Cesar Escobar-Viera says part of the reason is because social media takes up a lot of time from the day. This time could be used in a more productive way. Authors from the article/experiment mentioned social comparison could be a factor also. Most of what we see on social media is framed from a positive standpoint. Majority of the time from a wealthy or famous person. University of Pittsburgh and co-author said young adults who are at “critical junctures in life to identity development and feel that they can’t measure up to the impossible ideals they are exposed to.”
This is a very big issue in society today. I agreed with everything that was stated in the article. Social media is used by almost 80 percent of the youth and is used for communication with family and friends every day. Whether it’s for feedback, business, or just to keep up with what’s going on in the world. The problem is we see apps like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter as outlets. This could be beneficial for some, but negative feedback and bad influences could have other affects. The Media could indeed control the way we see things as individuals and catch the attention of young minds. I believe that’s basically what the co-author was trying to say in the last couple of sentences. The young adults, probably less fortunate than others, see these other young adults that have a lot more flashing fortune. This puts a lot of pressure on that particular crowd and if this standard isn’t matched or met, it might make them feel less than and start to spiral into depression. It could even possibly lead to bad behavior to obtain the goals. The main reason I chose this article is because I also believe that depression leads to stress. Stress is known to be detrimental. Stress leads to several health conditions like heart disease and liver problems. Stress can lead to bad decisions like alcohol abuse and drug abuse also.
(Questions)
1. Do you think Depression is a lead way to stress and that young adults use drugs to stimulate that feeling? Is this the reason for young adults having more heart conditions or even committing suicide as a last result for not being able to control it?
2. Would you consider social media being just as much addictive as any other drug? State your thoughts on the latest studies saying even though there are higher depression levels we still continue to use the media.
